Finding a salon that has your hair’s needs in mind is vital for your overall hair journey. Curly hair specifically has unique structural features and needs that must be viewed and treated differently to straight, less textured hair types. In particular the curly hair products used, right from the cleanser used to the treatment, moisturisers and stylers applied.
However, what is of greater importance is the healthy hair practices you adopt outside of the salon. Your hairstylist is not responsible for the health of your hair, you are through your daily practices.
How often should you visit a curly hair salon?
According to Hairdresser’s Journal, , the average woman visits the salon on average every 6 weeks for a standard trim, every 10 weeks for a colour treatment and twice per year for a special events.
The average woman with textured hair visits a salon at best every 4 weeks, worst case once a quarter or semi-annually for a trim, this has been echoed in a Goodhousekeeping article titled “How often you need to get a haircut, according to your hair type, texture and length”.
With these timeframes in mind, you need to consider what you are doing to ensure your salon visits are worthwhile and you achieve the curls you desire.

Whether you’re a salon goer or not. We believe you should follow some key healthy hair practices and principles if you are to have a successful healthy hair journey and see results with your haircare products alongside your salon visits.
1. Know your hair porosity – how quickly your hair absorbs water and moisture.
Ensure you keep up with regular wash days. We recommend a wash day every 7- 10 days. With one in every four washes including a clarifying shampoo or cleanser to strip the hair of build-up, toxins, debris and dead skin. We have a range of cleansers available including moisturising, clarifying and chelating cleansers.
2. Incorporate a conditioning treatment into your regimen, this can be via:
3. Observe your moisture retention cycles – this simply refers to how long your hair can go before drying out after your recent wash day.
Imparting moisture in your strands is the easy part, given the nature of curly, coily and kinky hair textures and the need for regular moisture, your moisturising technique can ensure you can go several days without refreshing. If you’re new to your curly journey, this may appear unachievable at first, but with regular practice you will see an improvement in the health of your hair and your moisture retention cycle.
The goal is always to remoisturise your curls before they dry out, once your curls become dry, they are more prone to brittleness and breakage.
4. Stay Hydrated
Moisture and hydration starts from the inside, directly from the water we consume which feeds our entire body including the scalp. The scalp is where natural moisture through sebum production is released and travels from the root of your hair follicle down to the tip.
Particularly in warm climates such as the UAE and wider middle east, it is recommended you consume on average 1.5 – 2 litres of water per day.
5. Eat a balanced diet and take the necessary supplements
Ensuring that your body is nourished with a variety of protein and iron rich foods is essential, as the quality and quantity of your hair strands depends on it. If you maintain a balanced diet yet still suffer from weak, brittle strands, we recommend you get some blood work done. Blood results will indicate whether you have any nutrient or vitamin deficiencies, thereafter you can take the necessary steps to rectify this for healthier hair growth at a follicular level. This is not just our recommendation, however the advice of experienced health care professionals, read what hair doctors have to say on this topic here.6. Protect your curls from the elements (friction, tension and external aggressors)
Ways to avoid friction on the hair shaft includes silk or satin protection at night, you can use a silk or satin bonnet or silk pillowcases. We recommend that if you opt for silk, you choose 100% pure mulberry silk which contains protein – this is what the hair fiber is naturally made up of and supports moisture retention. Reduced friction leads to curl pattern preservation, frizz prevention and reduced breakage caused by daily wear and tear from hair manipulation.
Additionally, use the right sunscreen for your hair during the summer months, some oils do provide a low degree of sun protection but what we are referring to here is uniquely formulated heat and thermal protectants which provide the hair fiber with a layer of protection that prevents moisture escaping and slows down the transfer of heat to the hair. Key ingredients in these products include PVP, Polymers and/or Wheat Protein. Why not try our summer favourite Mielle Mongongo Oil Thermal & Heat Protectant Spray?
Before you visit a curly hair salon
A pre poo (pre shampoo) treatment is a game changer for people with curly, coily or kinky hair textures, we recommend this ahead of every wash day as well as salon visit.
A pre poo treatment is designed to soften your strands, aid detangling and prime the hair with essential nutrients and protection before cleansing.
You maybe thinking, how does this make sense?
Did you know every time you cleansing your hair or wet it the hair shaft swells and the hair cuticle is raised? To minimise the negative effects of swelling a pre shampoo treatment particularly oils can infuse strength and provide a light protective barrier to the hair before being removed during the final wash.
Consider incorporating a pre poo oil such as Ecoslay hot sauce pre poo or Cachos brazil ( now Rios curls) High Porosity Hair Elixir into your haircare regimen.
In summary, we believe it is essential to regularly visit your curly hair salon but your practices and regimen at home should not be neglected, as this can set you back on your healthy hair journey and ultimately mean money is wasted as you can only enjoy salon results for a few days post treatment. Remember to do your part and the results will show!
